Why We Built a Caption Tool Just for Indian Creators

India is the world's largest short-form video market. But most captioning tools were built for English. Here's why that gap exists — and why we decided to close it.

India has more short-form video viewers than any country on earth. Hundreds of millions of people open Instagram, YouTube Shorts, or Moj every day to watch content in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi — in their language, about their world. And yet when those creators opened CapCut's auto-captions or tried a tool like Submagic, they got garbled transliterations, missed words, and zero support for romanization.

The gap we kept running into

The problem wasn't just accuracy. It was the entire assumption baked into most captioning tools: that the creator speaks English, has a USD credit card, and downloads apps on a high-storage phone. None of those assumptions hold for the majority of Indian creators. A fitness creator in Pune shooting Reels in Marathi shouldn't need to switch to English to get decent captions — and they definitely shouldn't have to convert rupees to dollars to pay for it.

What "built for India" actually means

  • Transcription models tuned for Indian accents and code-switched speech
  • 40+ languages with full word-level sync — not just European languages with Indian tacked on
  • Romanization: converting Hindi/Tamil/Bengali to phonetic Latin so regional creators can reach a broader audience
  • INR pricing with UPI support — no international card, no currency conversion
  • Browser-based with no install — important for low-storage Android devices common across India

The bigger vision

ClipCaption started as a captioning tool. It's evolving into something bigger: an AI video assistant that handles everything from audio cleanup to captions to transcript editing to generating your Instagram post copy — built for the kind of creator workflow that's dominant in India. One creator, one phone, unlimited content potential. We're not building a port of a Western tool with Indian language support added later; we're building from the Indian creator's actual workflow outward.

India produces more short-form video content than any country. The tools should be built for that reality, not retrofitted from an English-first template.
